Willoughby Scholars

“One never knows how a chance gift, meeting, conversation or kindness can influence an entire life.”

— Bob Willoughby

The Scholarship

The Willoughby Society is a social enterprise with a collective mission to preserve and share famous mid-century photographer Bob Willoughby's body of work so we might inspire and delight new artists and art lovers. Bob’s passion for and dedication to art expanded beyond his own work, and was reflected in his relationships with artists, his inventiveness, and in his personal collection of work from across the world and time periods.

We believe in the future of human art, and therefore the education, skills, tools, and crafts that support the entire art industry from film, to photography, to physical arts in any medium. Bob’s art education empowered him to pursue a lifelong and culture shaping career—creating opportunities for new artists through the Willoughby Scholarship honors his legacy.

Willoughby Scholars

A Willoughby Scholar is an artist who is not only passionate about creating art, but is also interested in learning and preserving the different mediums, tools, crafts, and skills that go into creating art of all kinds. From the physical to digital, ancient methods to contemporary techniques - a Willoughby Scholar is curious about the history of their practice and invested in its future. To be awarded The Willoughby Scholarship is to show some of the same keen appreciation and inventiveness that made Bob Willoughby a great photographer, artist, collector, and patron.

The Award

Willoughby Scholars receive a one-time $5,000 award to be used towards art degree programs, or similar programs approved by our board.

Awards are determined by an art submission and essay contest, considered by our board of Society founders and guest artists each year.

Our call for submissions will open in February 2025 and close on May 1st. Five winners will be selected by the end of May and awarded scholarships in time for fall semester commencement.
