Marilyn Monroe, portrait in magenta dress
Hollywood - 1952
20th Century Fox threw a poolside party for Marilyn Monroe and Bob’s agent insisted that he cover it, stating, “Anything you get on Monroe will sell.” Reluctantly, Bob attended. The studio flew Monroe in on a helicopter for dramatic effect, managing to blow umbrellas, hats, and nearly everything else into the pool. A small crowd of photographers rushed the helicopter to meet her, but Bob stayed back. Then, something amazing happened. Marilyn walked right up to him, which Bob called, “pure luck.” He was preparing to take a photograph, looking at her through his viewfinder, when he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up at her approach. Suddenly he understood what all of the fuss was about.
