Gerry Mulligan directs

Los Angeles - 1953

Noted perfectionist Gerry Mulligan directs his quintet during a recording session in Los Angeles, 1953. Photographed for Harper’s Bazaar. Bob recalls being at The Haig one night and a few people in the back of the room were talking and laughing rather loudly. Mulligan just stopped playing, folded his arms over his big sax and waited. When the patrons realized they were the cause of the silence, they scrunched down in their seats promising to sin no more. A nod to the group - and the music continued.
